How to Make a Pom Pom Spider

This project is fun and easy and uses materials you may already have around your home.
Remember, it's always a good idea to practice at home first!

Suggested Materials:

* 1 x ball of wool (you will need approximately 10 metres)
* 1 x small piece of scrap cardboard
* 4 x pipe cleaners
* 1 x pair wiggly eyes (optional)
* 1 x sheet white office paper (not needed if you have wiggly eyes)
* Felt-tip markers (not needed if you have wiggly eyes)
* Craft or wood glue (strong enough to glue eyes onto your woolly spider)
* Pencil
* Tape measure
* Scissors

Suggested Instructions:

Pom Pom Spider

Step 1: Cut one piece of wool about 10 metres long. (Your wool can be black for a scary spider or brightly coloured for a crazy spider!).

Step 2: Cut your cardboard so that it is about 10cm x 6cm (this does not need to be exact).

Pom Pom Spider

Step 3: Hold your card lengthways and wrap the full length of your wool around and around, creating a covering of wool loops about 5cm wide. Important: you will need to take your wool loops off your cardboard later so make sure you are not winding them too tight.

Step 4: Now gently slide your wool loops off your cardboard. Make sure that they retain their basic shape.

Step 5: Turn your wool loops so that the open ends are now top and bottom and the unopen edges are facing towards the outside.

Pom Pom Spider

Step 6: Place your 4 pipe cleaners across the middle of your wool loops from left to right. There should be an equal amount of pipe cleaner poking out on both sides. These are your spider’s legs.

Pom Pom Spider

Step 7: Take another short piece of wool and tie it around both open ends of your wool, securing your wool loops and pipe cleaners together in the middle in one tight bundle. Tie a firm knot.

Pom Pom Spider

Step 8: Take your scissors and cut the unopened edges of your wool loops on either side. Fluff them into a pom pom and arrange your pipe cleaners so that they look like 8 spider’s legs.

Pom Pom Spider

Step 9: Glue on your wiggly eyes….or draw, cut and glue on paper eyes.

Pom Pom Spider

Step 10: Take your pom pom spider to class!
