Titanic Orange
Science Trick

This quick and easy science "trick" is fun and interesting and uses materials you may already have around your home.
Remember, it's always a good idea to practice at home first!

Suggested Materials:

* 1 x orange with skin still on
* 1 x orange with no skin
* 1 x orange skin which has been peeled in one continuous piece
* 1 x tall plastic jug or container (clear plastic, if possible)
* Water

Suggested Instructions:

Titanic Orange

Step 1: At home, fill your plastic jug or container with water. Add your orange with the skin still on and watch how it floats. Then take it out of the water.

Step 2: Put your skinless orange into the water and watch it sink straight to the bottom.

Step 3: Now put your continuous string of orange peel into the water and watch it float. Amazing! It is the skin on the orange which keeps it afloat.

Step 4: Practice this science "trick" a few times at home before trying it at school, if necessary.

Step 5: At school, repeat Step 1 to Step 3. Ask your teacher for help if needed.
