Liquid Lifting Straw
Simple Science Trick

This quick and easy science "trick" is fun and interesting and uses materials you may already have around your home.
Remember, it's always a good idea to practice at home first!

Suggested Materials:

* 1 x drinking straw (clear, if possible)
* 1 x cup full of water with food colouring added
* 1 x clear empty plastic cup (or similar)

Suggested Instructions:

Step 1: At home, place your straw 6 to 8 centimetres into your coloured water in an upright position.

Step 2: Place your index finger firmly over the top of the straw and lift the straw out of the coloured water. You will see coloured water trapped inside the straw.

Step 3: Show your straw to your "audience" without removing your finger from the top of the straw. Keep your straw in an upright position.

Step 4: Move your straw over the top of the clear plastic cup and take your finger off the top of your straw. Watch the coloured water come rushing out of the straw.

Step 5:  You may like to practice this trick a few times at home before trying it at school.

Step 6: At school, repeat Step 1 to Step 4. Encourage your classmates to have a go too.
