Handkerchief Magic |
This quick and easy science "trick" is fun and interesting and uses materials you may already have around your home. |
Suggested Materials: |
* 1 x plastic drinking cup (with no handles) |
Suggested Instructions: |
Step 1: At home, fill your plastic drinking cup with water until it is about 3/4 full. |
Step 2: Take your men's handkerchief and drape it over your cup. The middle of your handkerchief should be positioned over the top of your cup. |
Step 3: Gently push the handkerchief down into the water with one finger so that the middle of the handkerchief becomes wet. |
Step 4: Now cup both of your hands around your plastic cup and gently pull the handkerchief down on all sides until the handkerchief is stretched as tight as a drum across the top of your cup. |
Step 5: Continue to pull the remainder of the handkerchief down and gather it firmly underneath your cup. Hold on tightly! |
Step 6: While still holding the handkerchief tightly, move your cup until it is above the large empty plastic bowl. (This bowl is there only to catch any accidental spills. If you feel confident performing this science trick without the bowl, simply discard it). |
Step 7: While you continue to hold the handkerchief tightly, tip your cup completely upside down. Watch as no water leaks through the handkerchief. Amazing! |
Step 8: Practice this trick a few times at home before trying it |
Step 9: At school, repeat Step 1 to Step 7. Ask your teacher for help if needed. |
